Xbox 360 finally hacked to run Linux?

>
It looks like someone may have finally hacked the 360 to run Linux. Xbox-Scene is reporting that during the German 23C3 Hacker Congress an anonymous presenter came on stage during an “open mic” type session. With 360 in hand, he (or she) proceeds to load King Kong and fiddles around for a minute or two. Then, on the screen appears the Linux penguin and the old Mac logo with the words “Coming soon…”. Could this finally be confirmation that the volatile King Kong shaders were exploited and are the key to hacking the 360’s OS? Only time will tell, but someone should have warned that anonymous hacker that this little experiment voided his 360’s warranty … joke’s on him!

[Thanks, BlueStar]

Popular game gifts this year

I came across this thread at xbox.com and it made me curious which games have seen a boost during this gift giving season. Here are some of the games that have seen a post Christmas day gaming boost in the blogs (not in any real order):

F.E.A.R.
I know a friend that got this so I know it was a popular gift. According to the xbox.com thread I mentioned, it looks like many people were hoping it would be a popular gift. It seems like it was.

Big Bumpin, Pocket Bike Racer, Sneak King
All the Burger King games saw an increase meaning they must have been a popular gift this season! That spells good news for BK marketing!

Call of Duty 3
No surprise here. The buzz on this game is good and it was just recently released so it was a natural stocking stuffer.

Gears of War
This game is played so much anyhow that it is hard to know if the day to day boost from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day means more people got it as a gift… but you have to imagine they did, so it is on the list.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance
People like super heroes for Christmas. That is just a known fact. ;)

Need for Speed Carbon
Nothing says Merry Christmas like a super tuned auto drifting in slow motion. Besides, Helo from Battlestar Galactica is in this! How can it be bad?

PGR 3
Maybe it was the new budget price that made this an attractive stocking stuffer?

Rainbow Six Vegas
This wasn’t a surprise. A great game released for the holidays always makes a great gift.

Sonic the Hedgehog
A few more people decided to get in on the Sonic action… If I had to guess, this was for the young Xbox owners in the crowd.

Tony Hawk’s Project 8
I was really tempted to pick this up for myself. The demo was pretty fun. It looks like a few people thought it was fun enough for a Christmas list.

Viva Pinata
This game just keeps growing and growing. Is it the cartoon? The gameplay? the cute factor? Regardless it was popular this season.

So there you have it. Click the game names to view the charts and see the jump from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day after presents have been opened!

Another interesting trend I see is that almost every Xbox Live Arcade game shows a dip in the numbers on Christmas day… this must be because everyone is playing with their retail games! It also says maybe MS needs to do a better job marketing the gamer points as stocking-stuffers so we can buy more arcade games for ourselves! Maybe next year!

So do any of you playing these games online notice more players? Is it easier to find games after the holidays?

Halo 3 tested in Iraq by our soldiers [update 1]

Over at the Gamespot’s forums pictures and a brief video have surfaced of the Halo 3 beta being played by soliders in Iraq. There are a few offscreen pictures posted and a short video showing what looks to be either the Halo 3 loading screen or the title screen. Bungie and Microsoft set up a huge gaming station to showcase Halo 3 multiplayer for the soldiers … how friggin’ cool is that? If any soldier living overseas is reading this, please send us a tip if you know about this sneak peak at Halo 3 and/or your reactions if you got some hands on time. More pictures and video after the break … salute!

>Update 1: Another video was found, updated video links after the break.

[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

Achievement acquired dates are on the fritz

The other day when Xbox Live matchmaking went down it looks to have affected Achievement acquired dates too. Justin10925 posted on the Xbox.com forums an account of having all of his previous achievements show that they’ve been acquired a month after they actually were. After Justin10925 got flamed in the forums, we investigated our own achievement stash and lo and behold our Gears of War achievements are a month off. Achievements that were acquired back in November now show an acquired date of December … doh! If you have an iron-clad memory and can recall specific days/months you acquired certain achievements then please check them. If things are a little wacky please comment, so we can build up evidence on this issue. We say investigate fanboys, investigate!

Real Time Worlds Crackdown interview

Xboxyde
posted a Q&A session they had with developer Real Time Worlds about a little game called Crackdown. In the interview Real Time Worlds talks about how development on Crackdown has progressed, how co-op was implemented, various multiplayer tidbits, and how games in the genre are sometimes unfairly labeled as Grand Theft Auto clones. After reading through the interview we can’t help but feel that Crackdown may be able to stand on its feet without the help of a little Halo 3 surprise in the box. Is anyone a little more interested in the game after reading the Q&A session and possibly willing to take Crackdown for a ride?

[Thanks, Boff]

Most played games of 2006 [update 1]

Major Nelson painstakingly compiled all the data from 2006 and came up with one gigantic list of the top games of 2006. Be sure to note that his list takes into account only unique users that played the game on Live. Gears of War is awarded the top spot for most played Xbox 360 game, Halo 2 takes original Xbox game honors, and the dark horse for XBLA games is UNO. Interesting note that Hexic HD came in second under Xbox 360 games, when were under the impression that it was an arcade game. Hmm. If you’re jonesing for some Xbox Live data in chart form, jump on over to Major’s site … he’s the stat master.

>Update 1: We overlooked the note that the top list contains all 360 content including Arcade games. So, Hexic HD you’re not so shady after all and we simply can’t label you as an XBLA game either.

X360F Review: XFPS - KB & Mouse on 360

Allowing the use of a keyboard and mouse (or a Dual Shock) on the Xbox 360, the XFPS has created quite a stir here at 360 Fanboy. Hailed by PC using FPS fans as a godsend and decried by proponents of an equal playing field, it’s a potentially controversial piece of hardware. When it comes to first person shooters, the advantages of a mouse and keyboard over a control pad cannot be denied, but is it fair for certain 360 players to have a distinct advantage over others? It’s an interesting question, but ultimately the answer lies in how well the XFPS actually performs. We put the unit through its paces and see what it’s worth.

Setting up the XFPS isn’t difficult at all. Just plug it into your 360, attach a wired controller, mouse, and keyboard to the XFPS, and turn on your 360. Once enabled, the XFPS has a standard keyboard and mouse layout, or you can choose to map buttons yourself. To map buttons, you need only tap the program button, the button you want to map on the 360 controller, and the corresponding button on the keyboard or mouse. For example, to map the shoot command to your left mouse button: tap the program button, pull the right trigger on your control, and click the left mouse button. Done. The XFPS only has two USB slots and the controller takes up one of those, so we’re not really sure how you program your mouse and keyboard if they’re both USB, though it is possible to use the default scheme. To use a Dual Shock (even a PS1 Dual Shock will work) all you have to do is plug it in. The Dual Shock simply mimics the layout of the 360 controller (minus the guide button).

Now for the test. We used three games: Gears of War (duh), Halo 2, and Rainbow Six 3: Vegas (demo version). Gears of War did not work well at all with the XFPS. Foregoing accuracy for now, let’s focus on one thing: Gears was designed from the ground up as a 360 title. For instance, the “roadie run” uses the A button, which requires you to take your thumb off the right stick. To compensate for this, rotation control moves to the left stick during the roadie run. If you’re using a keyboard however, you’re stuck holding down a key and manipulating the WASD keys. It’s awkward and in no way superior to a pad. Things like this make playing Gears a chore. Halo 2 played the best of the three games. It seems like the default keyboard layout was designed with Halo 2 in mind. Again though, issues pop up. For example, you won’t be sneaking much, because keyboards have no analog support. Vegas, again, has similar issues.

Of course, we’re sure PC diehards could live with these issues as long as they get their accurate mouse aiming. It’s a shame, then, that aiming with the mouse is nigh impossible. Put simply, the mouse aiming sucks, no matter what sensitivity you choose in the game. It’s jerky, and minute corrections — the kind you need to make headshots — don’t work at all. Games that have multiple degrees of sensitivity — like Vegas and Halo — work somewhat better, but games with only low, medium, and high settings don’t work nearly as well. By the time we popped in Vegas — a game where every shot counts –it became readily apparent that the XFPS was not the solution that FPS players were looking for. There’s always the chance that it might work better with a different mouse, but we doubt it. The simple truth is that 360 games were designed for analog sticks, and trying to emulate those with a mouse doesn’t work — at least not with the XFPS.

Also worth mentioning, there seemed to be a slight delay between button presses and the corresponding game action. Again, this is a huge no-no for pro FPS players. Last, but definitely not least, we were completely unable to use our headset while using our XFPS. We plugged the headset into the XFPS connected controller and the headset simply wasn’t recognized. This issue might be averted if you have a wireless headset — they connect to the 360 itself, not the controller — but we didn’t have one to test.

Before you stop reading this, it’s not all bad. As a Dual Shock adapter, the XFPS positively excels. We played through a level of Assault Heroes and had no problems with it whatsoever. The d-pad worked well for Pac-Man, too, and it might improve your Street Fighter prowess if you were raised on Playstation. Hell, it even makes a decent controller for Gears. There are no obvious deficiencies of any kind actually — apart from the lack of voice, of course. So, if you prefer Dual Shock (why?), the XFPS is a great adapter. It’s easily the best feature of the XFPS.

So, final thoughts. The XFPS is a non-choice if you want to enjoy FPS games as they are on the PC; 360 games just weren’t designed for it. There is no voice support — a problem for all those team oriented FPS games you want to play. Sorry, FPS fanboys, the XFPS is not your dream device. As a Dual Shock adapter, on the other hand, the XFPS is fantastic. Still, $80 is pretty steep if all you’re after is a Dual Shock adapter. However, if Team Xtender wanted to release a cheaper version that only supported the Dual Shock (and the SEGA Saturn pad while they’re at it), we’d buy it. As it stands, the XFPS offers not much bang for an awful lot of bucks.

UK deal: wireless adapter for £25

Filed under:

We received a nice deal for all of our UK readers today. Great Universal is apparently having a promotion where any £45 purchase receives a £20 discount. As fate would have it, the Xbox 360 wireless adapter happens to cost exactly £45. The offer comes via Hot UK Deals, which also provided us with our most recent UK deal, so we imagine the offer is legit. All that is required is a £45 purchase and the application of a discount code (D9) at checkout. Of course, there is a small caveat: it may take as long as 7 weeks to ship. Still, the savings are fairly substantial if you have the patience.

If any UK readers give this a try, let us know how it went.

[Thanks, Aaron Wright]

HD-DVD drive for only $99?

Filed under:

Over at the Fat Wallet forums truematic posted a flier for the store Game Play where the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive is listed at $99.95. That’s an astonishing $100 off of the normal price guys. Though it all seems a little fishy and is probably is just a typo. But if anyone has a Game Play nearby or tries to go to Best Buy to price match, then please post your stories. I’m thinking printing out a flier from home just won’t be enough for the powers that be to complete a price match … but we’re crossing our fingers. $99 HD-DVD drive FTW.
