A bunch of encoding problems have been popping up lately… encoding is how you store special characters together with “normal” text… it is a pretty complicated (read: lame) thing to deal with and we are always tracking something down.

Well tonight we discovered that a pretty big issue in our database (based on decisions we made back when we started the site) is causing encoding problems, sometimes causing a game to appear twice for people with forum accounts. For now, the fix for this is to cut out the duplicates by removing retail tracking from the presence feed… so for now, your presence feed will track demos and backcompat games so they appear in your blog. Retail games will only be tracking when they appear on your gamercard… this means that issues in the past with people playing over midnight can start to return until we can devise a fix for the encoding…

If this all sounds like Greek to you… it does to me too… I really hate encoding…
